I groan when I’m asked “Are you ready for Christmas?” It seems to get earlier and earlier each year. However, Christmas is God’s preparation to meet us. No-one looked forward to the first Christmas more than God. For all eternity He set his heart and mind to coming, dwelling, loving, revealing himself and redeeming humankind at Christmas. Nothing would have stopped him. The detail of God’s preparation, patient waiting and the oversight of all the characters makes for an unforgettable Christmas story. It unfolds with majesty and purpose. It’s the story that has defined history. The shepherds were instructed to [...]
“Give up for a while your false and failing attempts at merriment, and thank God for thin places, and for Advent, for a season that understands longing and loneliness and long nights. Let yourself fall open to Advent, to anticipation, to the belief that what is empty will be filled, what is broken will be repaired, and what is lost can always be found, no matter how many times it’s been lost.” Shauna Niequist "Christmas is built upon a beautiful and intentional paradox; that the birth of the homeless should be celebrated in every home." G.K. Chesterton "Of course there is [...]

Christmas times in all sorts of unexpected ways, and yes the artwork is a family members irreverent card to me! Searing light and soul searching times.... Cooking lots for others and the gift of this. The largest free-range turkey I'd seen: 7.5kg goodness. This saw multiple outings. A great selection of books given-to-me, as ever to read and enjoy. Not so much eating as grazing, after all the cooking. Less preaching this Christmas. Applying Noah's first dose of aftershave! Not so much reading initially.... My cooking achieved an average 8.5 rating;- though they were probably being kind! "Don't put any bourbons out, it [...]
The cry of this world for meaning and hope and life, was met one morning far away in the cry of a tiny baby. And with that cry, time stopped and started again. Through it everything was made new. And we are forever changed.
Gift giving this Christmas. Yep that was the unoriginal theme I explored! This was my offering this year in our school festival. The theme of Christmas gift-giving for me corners on the Luke 2 v 11 scripture:- “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.” In the announcement of the angels telling the shepherds there are at least three things about the baby Jesus. 1. It’s just what we were hoping for. 2. It’s more than we were expecting. 3. It’s just what we need. God is King, Lord and [...]
